The MAD Legal Industry Summit

In 2024, to align with World Mental Health Day, the inaugural MAD World Legal Industry Summit will be staged alongside the 7th MAD World Summit and we invite you to join us, whether you’re an individual, law firm, corporate legal department, government entity, chambers, law school, regulatory body or other organization or consultant involved in the legal profession.

The event will bring together key figures to provide insight and expertise on what is happening across the profession. Attendees will hear from industry experts on what they are doing, academic experts, regulators and other key stakeholders. It is a chance to learn, to be inspired and to go away armed both with greater understanding but also concrete steps to take in your organisation to improve mental health and wellbeing, and through that the performance of your people and organisation as a whole.

The crisis of mental health in the profession does not need repeating. According to a landmark 2021 Report from the International Bar Association, the average lawyer responding to their survey reported a level of wellbeing according to a World Health Organisation index below that at which a psychiatric assessment would be recommended. We are past the time for describing the extent of the problem and need to be doing something to address it

Emphasizing that well-being is an institution-wide responsibility is crucial, as it recognizes that both individuals and organizations play a role in creating a healthy and supportive work environment. The call for a culture shift in law to establish health and well-being as core aspects of professional success is a significant and progressive goal.

The commitment to real and lasting change through advocacy, research, education, technical and resource support, and stakeholder partnerships indicates a multifaceted strategy to drive positive change in the legal profession’s well-being landscape.

MAD World Legal Industry Summit is a well-thought-out initiative with a clear vision for fostering a healthier and more supportive legal community. It is hoped that this summit will contribute significantly to creating a positive impact on the well-being of individuals within the legal profession.

In putting together this legal sector summit we have partnered with the Mindful Business Charter (MBC). MBC is a community of employer organisations based primarily in the legal sector working together to address the causes of mental distress in the profession. Led by former law firm partner Richard Martin, MBC is a leading voice on mental health and wellbeing in the profession, focussed not on describing the extent of the problem, or supporting people in distress, but changing the culture of the profession to stop problems happening in the first place, and enabling lawyers to work both more effectively and more healthily.
